3am

Did not treat us well!

We thought we had figured out the whole sedation issues yesterday by adding the Dex.  However at 3am....we realized we were wrong.

Birk started thrashing around, kicking, moving, shaking his head side to side.  It took 2 nurses, Nick, me, a male RT and at one point the Resident on duty.  He knocked his vent tubing off twice during this episode.  If this part wasn't scary enough...after about 30 minutes of all this Birk decided he was going to start holding his breath.  He would bear down and resist the air from the vent.  As the color turned in his face from a pinkish color to a blue gray I had to walk away.  Nick stood by his face and the RT began to "bag" him.  For those of you who followed our NICU days and read our blog that term likely is familiar.  For those that have not heard that what "bagging" someone means is that they hook him up to this little bag over his mouth and start to give him manual breaths while cranking the amount of oxygen that comes with those breaths.  For a parent...this is awful.   This helped B settle down and catch him breath rather quickly.  They decided to up his meds (AGAIN) and we waited as his heart rate began to lower (it got a bit high during this episode), and watched his o2 level go up again.  This morning he has again required changes in meds etc.   During rounds they made the decision to take him off the Dex, and move him to a Catameen drip.  I don't know much about this yet, except I think it is a heavier sedative and it might have harder withdrawals.

We go down to the OR today at 1:45pm.  Please say a prayer that all looks well and they can ext abate on Wednesday.  That would hopefully end this sedation nightmare and we can start round 2 of this whole process!

I have already seen Birk gray and blue too many times in my life.  I pray that I NEVER have to witness that again.

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
